Choosing a Major
New Mexico State University offers over 150 undergraduate and graduate majors and specializations. Choosing a major that is right for you can be difficult, but we can help.
Begin your search for a major by evaluating your interest areas and career choices. The Career Exploration Center can help you evaluate your interests and suggest possible careers.
Keep in mind the following as you consider a major:
1. What courses are required for this major?
The requirements for degrees are in the undergraduate catalog. Meet with your academic advisor to plan how you will meet these requirements.
2. Choosing a major and choosing a career are not be the same thing.
Some careers require degrees in that field: if you want to be a nurse, major in nursing. Others do not: if your interest is public relations, you could major in communication studies, journalism and mass communication, English, business, or others areas. There is often little relationship between degree and employment. A major neither guarantees not limits employment to in that field.
3. Have a career, need a major?
Visit the Career Exploration Center for information on majors that will help you connect majors to careers.
